Over three million patients have received Zimmer NexGen knee implants since 1994, when they were first approved by the Federal Drug Administration. Individuals who suffer from chronic arthritis, degenerative hip diseases, and other joint conditions have opted for these implants in the hopes that it would give them back their quality of life. While many have achieved the desired results, there are a number of recipients who have experienced pain, suffering, and lack of mobility after the procedure due to implant failure.
Zimmer NexGen Knee Implants FDA Approval
Though the original NexGen Flex received FDA approval in the 1990s, the NexGen LPS-Flex Fixed-Bearing Knee implant that is widely available as of 2016 did not undergo the same rigorous testing. This is due to the fact that the FDA does not require manufacturers to thoroughly test a product if there are similar devices currently on the market. The process is known as the 510(k) premarket notification. Zimmer stated that the new design would the same as the original non-high Flex model, with the exception of a few minor adjustments. This new device would have a 155-degree flexion, instead of a 120-degree flexion. Thus, in theory, patients would be able to have greater mobility and range of motion.
Zimmer NexGen Knee Implant Complications
The NexGen knee implant that is available today may be linked to a number of complications, such as:
Lack of mobility
Discomfort or pain in the knee area
Knee swelling or loosening
Clicking or crunching noises within the knee
In recent years there have been a number of lawsuits filed against Zimmer on behalf of patients who received the NexGen Lateral Posterior Stabilization LPS-Flex, NexGen Cruciate Retaining CR-Flex, and NexGen Minimally Invasive Solutions MIS Tibial components. These patients claim the device has led to a variety of health complications and/or required corrective surgeries.
Patients who have received a Zimmer NexGen knee implant can speak with an experienced legal professional to see if they qualify for compensation. Defective knee replacements can result in a loss of mobility and chronic pain. A qualified attorney may be able to help patients and their loved ones receive compensation for their injuries.
