Salmonella Tainted Egg Recall Expands from 228 Million to 380 Million in a Span of Hours. Salmonella food poisoning is characterized by symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea and occasional fever. State health departments in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are investigating the illnesses to determine if there is a link to the tainted shell eggs. California has seen a huge increase in the number of salmonella related illnesses in recent months compared to the average of previous years, with 266 cases reported over past weeks. These illnesses are now believed to be linked to salmonella contaminated eggs.
Wright County Egg Farms is one of the largest egg producers in the nation, and provides foodservice companies, distribution centers and food wholesalers in Colorado, California, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Missouri, Iowa and Wisconsin. The eggs are then further distributed to various retailers nationwide, which means the potential for new illnesses is huge.
In recent hours, the states where the eggs were distributed have expanded to Arkansas, Georgia, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah and Washington as well.
In April of this year, approximately 80 illnesses were related to banana pudding and chocolate pie containing meringue served at a Durham barbecue restaurant according to health officials. This outbreak is believed to have been related to the tainted shell eggs as well.
Consumers across the nation are cautioned to be on the lookout for the salmonella tainted eggs which were packaged under many brand names including Albertson, Dutch Farms, Boomsma’s, Farm Fresh, Lucerne, Mountain Dairy, James Farms, Glenview, Ralph’s, Shoreland, Sunshine, Trafficanda, Pacific Coast, Lund, Kemp and Hillandale. Consumers should be aware that the eggs are packaged in 6, 12 and 18 count egg cartons, as well as loose eggs for institutional use. Julian dates range from 136 to 229, plant numbers include 1026, 1413, 1720, 1942 and 1946. Consumers should look for these codes which are stamped either on the end of the carton or on the outside of the case. The codes will begin with a “P” followed by the plant number, then Julian date.
Wright County Egg officials said on August 18th that “We are undertaking this additional recall to further protect the safety of consumers – this voluntary measure is consistent with out commitment to egg safety, and it is our responsibility.” According to an earlier statement by Wright County Egg officials, the FDA is on-site to insect the barns and review records.
